Logo Design Process

22 Jul

To get ready for the NYC Honey Day and to distribute the rewards for Kickstarter, I have been burning midnight oil to finally complete the logo (and the reward ‘woodcut’ design)…which benefitted from my being unemployed so that I could finally concentrate on creative projects.

FINAL DESIGN – which will be printed in gold ink on black paper:

PROCESS LEADING TO THE DESIGN

DESIGN OBJECTIVES:
– Express the ‘local-ness’ of Queens Apiary
– Express the ‘handmade-ness’ of the products by Queens Apiary
– Be conducive to woodblock printing (which I’ve decided to replace with rubber stamping – carving wood is too labor intensive and time consuming at this point, after extracting 16 frames of honey by hand.)

Just like the bees don’t use a ruler to draw out their comb, I wanted to figure out how to cleanly draw hexagon tiles (like honeycombs) freehand. I started out with drawing freehand square grids and quickly realized that hexagons are more friendly with equilateral triangles and circles…So I created a triangular grid instead.

FINAL SKECTH and VECTORIZATION IN ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR
(Lost all the “Queens” landmarks, which was cluttering the logo. The LIC Big Alice (Allys?) smokestacks seemed to ‘pollute’ the combs, and the Unisphere / Corona park metaphor was too much. So, they’re gone…)
